Cementerio de Santa María de Pazzis




This cemetery is one of the most beautiful cemeteries in the world. This cemetery holds the final resting places of many residents and famous composers of the island of Puerto Rico. This cemetery got its name from the honor of Maria de Magdalena de Pazzi. This cemetery is located outside by the walls of the Fort San Felipe del Morro. In here you will find the graves of many historic Puerto Rican figures such as:

a. The Grave of Pedro Albizu Campos




 Pedro Albizu Campos was a Puerto Rican poet and lawyer. He has the reputation he has today because he was the leader of one of the biggest independence movements in all of Puerto Rico. Being falsely accused for a murder, Albizu Campos was sent to the Fort San Felipe del Morro to where he was tortured brutally for about 5 years. His grave can be found on the Cementerio de Santa Maria de Pazzis. 

B. Alejandro Tapia y Rivera




Alejandro Tapia y Rivera was famous Puerto Rican poet, dramaturg, essayist, and writer. He fought for women's rights and was a fervent abolitionist. He is known and considered as the Father of Puerto Rican Literature. He is the person who has contributed the most to the advancement in culture to Puerto Rico's literature. You can find his grave inside the Cementerio de Santa Maria de Pazzis. 

C. José Julián Acosta



José Julián Acosta was a famous lawyer, teacher, writer, and political leader. He left a huge mark in the island of Puerto Rico. He became a delegate to the Spanish Courts representing the Liberal Reformist Party. He also had many well-known abolitionist ideals. Unfortunately, he was placed in prison for a long time after the whole Grito de Lares scandal.  You can find his grave inside the Cementerio de Santa Maria de Pazzis right next to Jose Gautier Benitez's grave.  

D. José Gautier Benítez

Jose Gautier Benítez was a very well known leading exponent of the second era of romanticism. His poetry was characterized by the subtlety of emotion while addressing themes of love, country, and death. His writing was influenced by the liberal reformist ideals he had at the time. He is a very important figure to the period of romanticism. His grave can be found on the Cementerio de Santa Maria de Pazzis right next to Jose Julian Acosta's grave. 

E. José de Diego





José de Diego was not only an amazing poet, but he was also an amazing jurist, jounalist, essayist, orator, and politician. He was considered a forerunner for the modernist movement in Puerto Rico. He was always advocating the independence of Puerto Rico as an elected official and leader. People today, know his name more for his advocacy of independence for Puerto Rico rather than his poetry. He can be seen as the father of Puerto Rico's modern independence movement. His grave can be seen in the Cementerio de Santa Maria de Pazzis.
