El Cuartel de Ballaja was constructed by the Spanish Army in between 1854 and 1864. This building is considered one of the the most impressive constructions of Spain in the New World. It was used as an infantry barrack and housing for thousands of soldiers until 1898. This structure was built for mostly military purposes. This building has evolved into an important cultural center for Puerto Rico's rich cultural heritage. This beautiful building is now used for cultural, educational, and touristic purposes. This astonishing building can be found next to the Plaza de Quinto Centenario.
